Letterboxing, Transitions and Colour Grading
My Year 10's Continued on with their continuity editing and we added some letterboxing to our footage which are basically black bars that appear at the top and bottom of a movie sometimes. This can also add to the cinematic quality of a film.
We also discussed and used two basic transitions. A dip to black and a cross dissolve. A dip to black generally signifies the start and end of a scene and a cross dissolve generally signifies the passing of time.
The next thing we did with our footage was to colour grade it. Colour grading is what professional video editors do to enhance the colours of their video footage. We discussed that generally, most colour grading that you see on movies is high contrast and with high saturated colours. We also touched briefly on when you might choose a cool or warm colour grade based on the type of movie being made, for example, a horror movie would more likely suit a cool/cold colour grade to emphasize the theme. We used the Lumetri Colour feature in Adobe Premiere Pro to create the effects. I will update this post with a colour grading video tutorial when I get the chance.
